National level "Extractive Industries Social and Environmental Impacts" network |
On December 22nd 2009, DPA conducted a national meeting on extractive industries social and environmental impacts, held in Phnom Penh, which was attended by network members and other partners. This one-day meeting was had 46 participants, including 15 females. The purposes of this national meeting were (1) to discuss the draft strategic plan framework of the EISEI Network; (2) to update the group on EISEI Network activities; (3) to discuss the roles and responsibilities of members of EISEI Network; (4) to give an update and discuss the picture book on the impacts of mineral exploitation; and (5) to discuss water resource management in Cambodia.
Lim Morn, the Cambodian Coordinator of Human Rights Protection and Minority Community Development, had participated in three previous EISEI meetings. He said that after joining this national meeting, he gained more knowledge related to mining in Cambodia and felt more confident about joint efforts at advocacy. The EISEI Network was organized in 2008 and now includes 31 organizations, including national, international organizations and community-based organizations in the provinces. The EISEI Network was established for information-sharing related to social and environmental impacts from extractive industry activities in Cambodia and national level communication. This network is envisioned to provide a solid foundation for implementing future education, technical support and advocacy initiatives addressing community and civil society concerns about extractive industry activities. |
