Groundbreaking Tests on Water and Soil Testing in Cambodia
In 2010, DPA commissioned a comprehensive analysis on soil and water in various regions throughout the country in order to provide sufficient baseline information for areas potentially affected by extractive industries.

EISEI researched and selected a consulting company to conduct tests which began in June 2010. These tests of baseline soil and water were commissioned for 15 target sites in Mondulkiri (three sites), Ratanakiri province (three sites), Preah Vihear (three sites), Steung Treng (three sites) and Koh Kong (three sites).

The report for the first phase at Ratanakiri and Mondulkiri province has been completed and testing in Koh Kong province will be done by the end of 2010 with the report being available in March 2011

In Preah Vihear and Steung Treng, Resource Development International Cambodia (RDI) took samples in order to complete the first phase of the study. Additional sampling for water and soil testing was taken from Ratanakiri and Mondulkiri Province during the wet season in November, 2010 since previous tests were done during the dry season.  The report for baseline soil and water quality testing in Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri province was completed in October, 2010.

Since baseline data is difficult to come by in Cambodia, results of the EISEI Network’s baseline testing efforts will be shared with relevant government ministries such as the Ministry of Water Resource and Meteorology (MWRM) and the Ministry of Environment, and will form the evidence base for advocacy and other activities should environmental issues arise in these areas in the future.
